NEAT for Keto! How you can accelerate your fat loss on the Ketogenic Diet even if you hate to exercise.
I personally LOVE exercising… but I am kind of a freak, and I recognize not everyone does, and that is FINE. You don’t have to be a freak like me to burn more fat faster if you are on a diet like the Ketogenic Diet.
I have conversations with a lot of people who are chomping down on yummy keto diet foods and living the ketogenic lifestyle now, and a lot of them are seeing results, but want to see how they can increase their results or speed up their keto results. I also talk to people who are on the ketogenic diet diabetes destroyer program because they know that the change in lifestyle from being a carb burner to a fat burner can improve their blood glucose levels and insulin sensitivity. AND… a lot of people coming into the keto game from this perspective haven’t done a lot of movement for a while due to pain, or some other things in the way that have frustrated progress for them, so how do we get better keto results without exercising? NEAT!
NEAT, or NEPA stands for non-exercise activity thermogenesis (or non-exercise physical activity) which is muscley nerd speak for anything that isn’t necessarily exercise, but does have you moving your body. If you have a step tracker like a fit bit or something like that, then it is usually tracking your NEAT in a roundabout way through your steps over the course of the day.
One of the funny things about NEAT is that in the form of a leisurely walk, it is super low impact and also great for insulin sensitivity, blood flow, and fat loss. I know bodybuilders who would really focus on just upping their walking or stair walking leading up to a bodybuilding competition because it was a very low impact low intensity way to improve their fat loss while dieting down, without affecting their lean body mass.
So! my favorite form of NEAT is Hiking! I love it, because it is just enough to get my heart rate into the ideal fat burning zone without me even realizing it and I just love being out their in nature.
If you are someone who is loving the high fat keto meals and the results that you are getting but want to take it up a notch without going straight to exercising if you have been out of the game for a while, then start your day with a nice walk or hike on an empty stomach to really see your fat loss accelerate!
